The Honorable Clair E. Dickinson

The Honorable Clair E. Dickinson obtained his BA from the University of Pittsburgh and his law degree from Cleveland-Marshall College of Law.  He served as Editor-in-Chief of the Cleveland State Law Review during the 1976-1977 academic year.

Judge Dickinson was a law clerk for United States District Judge Leroy J. Contie Jr. from 1977 through 1979 and an associate with Jones, Day, Reavis & Pogue from 1979 until 1983.  From 1983 through 1993, he was a member of the litigation group at Brouse McDowell, including serving as the chair of that group.  From 1999 through 2007, he headed Brouse McDowell’s appellate practice group, handling matters in federal and Ohio intermediate courts of appeals and the Ohio Supreme Court.  He was named a “Super Lawyer” in the appellate practice area by the publisher of Cincinnati Magazine.

Judge Dickinson served as a member of this Court from 1993 until 1999.  He returned to the Court in February 2007.

From 1989 through 1993 and from January 2003 through December 2006, he served as a member of Summit County Council, including serving as President of that body during 1991, 2005, and 2006.  He has also been a member of the Board of Visitors of Cleveland- Marshall College of Law, a member of the board of the Akron Summit Convention & Visitors Bureau, and member of the Summit County Criminal Justice Advisory Board.

Judge Dickinson is admitted to practice law in Ohio, the United States Supreme Court, the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, the United States District Court for the Northern District of Ohio, and the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan.  He is a member of the Akron Bar Association, Lorain County Bar Association, Medina County Bar Association, Wayne County Bar Association, American Bar Association, and Ohio State Bar Association, and he serves as a member of the Council of Delegates of the Ohio State Bar Association and as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Akron Bar Association.

Judge Dickinson and his wife Kathie live in Akron.  They have three grown children and one grandchild.
