School Visits

University of Akron School of Law - April 11, 2024

The Court held oral arguments at the University of Akron School of Law on Thursday, April 11, 2024.  Students, faculty, staff, and members of the public attended the arguments.

Following a brief introduction, the Court heard oral arguments in two cases.  The arguments were presided over by Judge Donna Carr, Judge Jennifer Hensal, and Judge Betty Sutton.

After the arguments, the attorneys who presented arguments introduced themselves to the students.  Judge Carr, Judge Hensal, and Judge Sutton then answered questions from those in attendance.

The event was concluded by a lunch in the Law School commons where the judges and lawyers enjoyed meeting with and talking with many law students.  The Court thanks the Law School for the invitation and appreciates the willingness of the attorneys to present their oral arguments at the University of Akron School of Law.

 

Medina High School - February 13, 2024

The Court heard oral arguments at Medina High School on February 13, 2024.  Judge Jennifer Hensal, Judge Scot Stevenson, and Judge Jill Flagg Lanzinger heard arguments in two cases.  About 400 students, along with teachers and staff, watched the oral arguments.

The students asked thoughtful questions of the judges and advocates.  Thanks to the students and teachers for their preparation before the arguments and to the attorneys for presenting their oral arguments at Medina High School.

 

Elyria High School - May 2, 2023

The Court heard oral arguments at Elyria High School on May 2, 2023.  Judge Donna Carr, Judge Scot Stevenson, and Judge Jill Flagg Lanzinger heard arguments in two cases (available on YouTube here and here).  About 200 students, teachers, and staff, attended the arguments.

The judges and attorneys participated in a question-and-answer session with the students, who asked excellent questions, after the last oral argument.  The judges also enjoyed meeting with several students after the oral arguments and talking with staff from the school.

University of Akron School of Law - April 3, 2023

The Court held a special Monday session of oral arguments at the University of Akron School of Law.  Students, faculty, staff, and members of the public attended the arguments.

Following an introduction to the appellate process, the Court heard oral arguments in three cases.  The arguments were heard by Judge Donna Carr, Judge Betty Sutton, and Judge Jill Flagg Lanzinger.

After the arguments, Judge Carr, Judge Sutton, and Judge Lanzinger were joined by Judge Scot Stevenson.  The four judges talked about their backgrounds and paths to the Court of Appeals.  The judges then answered questions from those in attendance.

The event was concluded by a lunch in the Law School commons where the judges enjoyed meeting with and talking with many first-year law students.  The Court thanks the Law School for the invitation and appreciates the willingness of the attorneys to present their oral arguments at Akron Law School.

 

Hudson Junior Leadership - October 13, 2022

The Court hosted 15 high school students from Hudson High School and Western Reserve Academy through the Hudson Junior Leadership program.  The students visited the Court to learn about the court system, including how appeals are handled in the Ninth District Court of Appeals.  Judge Jennifer Hensal and Judge Thomas Teodosio met with the students and explained how they became judges and their roles as judges.  The judges used an actual case to show the students the steps in an appeal including how the judges prepare for oral argument.  The students then watched a recording of the actual oral argument and discussed how they would decide the case.

Elyria Catholic High School - April 26, 2022

The Court heard oral arguments at Elyria Catholic High School on April 26, 2022.  Judge Donna Carr, Judge Jennifer Hensal, and Judge Thomas Teodosio heard arguments in one case.  More than 100 students, along with several teachers and staff, attended the arguments.

University of Akron School of Law - April 5, 2022

The Court held oral arguments at the University of Akron School of Law.  About 50 students, faculty, and staff attended the arguments.

Before the oral arguments, Judge Jennifer Hensal spoke to the students and discussed the appellate process.  The students then watched the oral arguments held before Judge Donna Carr, Judge Thomas Teodosio, and Judge Betty Sutton.

After the arguments, Judge Carr, Judge Teodosio, and Judge Sutton talked about their backgrounds and paths to the Court of Appeals.  They then answered questions from the students.

Hudson Junior Leadership - November 15, 2021

The Court hosted high school students from Hudson High School and Western Reserve Academy through Hudson Junior Leadership.  Almost 20 students visited the Court to learn about how appeals are handled.  Judge Jennifer Hensal and Judge Thomas Teodosio met with the students.  They explained their roles as judges and how they reached their current positions.  Judge Hensal and Judge Teodosio then led the students through the appellate process.  They used an actual case and explained how they prepare for oral arguments.  After the students watched the video-recorded oral argument, the judges talked with them about how a panel makes its decision.

Elyria Catholic High School - May 26, 2021

The Court held its second virtual visit at Elyria Catholic High School on May 26, 2021.  The students discussed two cases with their teacher before they watched the oral arguments.  The judges then visited via Zoom with the students.  The judges introduced themselves and shared a little about their backgrounds.   The students then asked excellent questions ranging from how people behave in a courtroom to how the judges decide cases.  About 25 students participated remotely for the virtual visit.

Revere High School - May 24, 2021

The Court held its first virtual court visit at Revere High School on May 24, 2021.  The students reviewed the written arguments of the parties and watched a video recorded oral argument before the virtual visit.  On the day of the visit, the judges introduced themselves, and then had a question-and-answer session with the students.  About 40 students participated in the virtual visit.

Elyria Catholic High School - February 20, 2020

The Court heard oral arguments at Elyria Catholic High School on February 20, 2020.  Judge Donna Carr, Judge Jennifer Hensal, and Judge Julie Schafer presided over two cases.  More than 100 students attended the arguments.

After the first argument, the judges and attorneys participated in a question-and-answer session with the students.  Before the second oral argument, a class of forensics students joined the other students.  After the second argument, the school hosted lunch for the judges, students, and teachers.

Nordonia High School - January 7, 2020

The Court heard oral arguments in two criminal appeals at Nordonia High School on January 7, 2020.  Judge Lynne Callahan, Judge Jennifer Hensal, and Judge Thomas Teodosio presided over the oral arguments before dozens of students and their teachers.  The students asked questions of the judges and attorneys after each argument.

The judges enjoyed lunch with students, teachers, and attorneys, between oral arguments.

The students are commended for the time they spent preparing to hear the oral arguments.  The Court thanks the teachers and appreciates the willingness of the attorneys to present their oral arguments at Nordonia High School.

The Court held oral arguments at the University of Akron School of Law on April 11, 2019.  Judge Donna Carr, Judge Jennifer Hensal, and Judge Julie Schafer, along with visiting Judge Cynthia Rice, heard oral arguments in three cases.  Judge Thomas Teodosio and Judge Lynne Callahan were scheduled to sit with Judge Rice on a fourth case, but it was continued.

 

About 100 students and faculty attended to watch the oral arguments.

The judges and attorneys then answered questions from the students during lunch following the last oral argument.

The Court thanks the attorneys for participating in the question and answer session and the University of Akron School of Law for the work that went into planning the oral arguments and hosting lunch after to allow the judges and attorneys to discuss a variety of questions raised by the students.

The Court heard two oral arguments at Elyria Catholic High School on March 7, 2019.  Judge Lynne Callahan, Judge Donna Carr, and Judge Jennifer Hensal presided over oral arguments in two criminal appeals.  Judge Julie Schafer and Judge Thomas Teodosio made introductory comments to the students before each argument.  About 100 students attended the arguments.

Nordonia High School - January 8, 2019

The Court heard two oral arguments at Nordonia High School on January 8, 2019.  Judge Lynne Callahan, Judge Julie Schafer, and Judge Thomas Teodosio heard arguments in two criminal appeals.  More than 100 students listened attentively to the arguments.  They also asked excellent questions of the judges and attorneys after each argument.

University of Akron School of Law - April 12, 2018

The Court heard four oral arguments at the University of Akron School of Law on April 12, 2018. This was the Court's first visit to the new moot courtroom at the Law School.  Judge Donna Carr, Judge Jennifer Hensal, and Judge Thomas Teodosio heard oral arguments in criminal and civil cases from Summit County.

Stow-Munroe Falls High School - March 20, 2018

The Court heard two oral arguments at Stow-Munroe Falls High School on March 20, 2018.  Judge Donna Carr, Judge Jennifer Hensal, and Judge Lynne Callahan heard oral arguments in criminal cases from Medina and Summit Counties.

After the second argument, the students asked the judges and attorneys questions.  The questions covered topics ranging from the backgrounds of the judges, their paths to the bench, and how the attorneys came to the positions they held as prosecutors and defense attorneys.

The visit would not have been possible without the preparation of the teachers and students and the willingness of the attorneys to present their cases in this educational setting.  The Court thanks all involved for their part in this successful experience.

 

St. Vincent St. Mary High School - February 15, 2018

The Court heard two oral arguments at St. Vincent St. Mary High School on February 15, 2018.  Judge Donna Carr, Judge Jennifer Hensal, and Judge Julie Schafer heard oral arguments in two criminal appeals.

The students asked questions of the judges and attorneys after the last argument.  The students were well prepared for the cases and they asked excellent questions about the judicial system, how the attorneys and judges prepare for oral argument, and about the path the judges took to reach the appellate court.

The Court held oral arguments at Walsh Jesuit High School in Summit County on October 12, 2017.  Judge Julie Schafer, Judge Thomas Teodosio, and Judge Lynne Callahan heard oral arguments in two cases.

Buchtel High School - November 21, 2013

The Court held oral arguments at Buchtel High School on November 21, 2013.  Judge Eve Belfance, Judge Jennifer Hensal, and Judge Carla Moore (a graduate of Buchtel High School), heard oral arguments in two cases before the high school's seniors.  After the oral arguments were completed, the judges held a question-and-answer session with the students.

The Court held oral arguments at Western Reserve Academy on November 29, 2012.  Judge Donna Carr, Judge Clair Dickinson, and  Judge Beth Whitmore, heard oral arguments in two cases before all of the school's students.  After the oral arguments, the judges met with a class to answer questions.

The Court held oral arguments at Stow-Munroe Falls High School on October 18, 2012.  Judge Donna Carr, Judge Beth Whitmore, and Judge Carla Moore, heard oral arguments in two cases before about 500 students.

For the seventh consecutive year, the Court held oral arguments at the University of Akron School of Law as part of the Law School's Orientation Week for new law students.  Judge Eve Belfance, Judge Clair Dickinson, and Judge Beth Whitmore heard oral arguments in three cases.  They answered questions from the students after the cases were argued.

Avon Lake High School - May 1, 2012

Avon Lake High School hosted oral arguments on May 1, 2012, as part of Lorain County's Law Day festivities.  Judge Eve Belfance, Judge Donna Carr, and Judge Beth Whitmore heard oral arguments in two cases.  The Judges and attorneys fielded questions from the students after the cases were argued.

The Court held oral arguments at Wooster High School on December 8, 2011.  Judge Donna Carr, Judge Clair Dickinson, and Judge Carla Moore heard oral arguments in two cases.  The Judges and attorneys answered questions from the students after the cases were argued.  The students were very engaged in the arguments and had a good discussion with their teacher after the arguments.

The Court heard oral argument in one case at the Quaker Square Inn at the University of Akron as part of the 2011 Street Law Summit.  More than 100 students from high schools in Summit County participated in the program.

The Court held oral arguments at Revere High School on December 2, 2010.  Judge Donna Carr addressed the students before each argument to tell them how cases reach the Court, what happens before oral argument, and what the judges do after the case is argued.  Judge Eve Belfance, Judge Donna Carr, and Judge Carla Moore then heard oral arguments in two criminal cases.  After each oral argument, the students asked numerous questions.  The Judges appreciate the work of the teachers and principal for allowing the Court to visit the school and students.

The Court held oral arguments at Stow-Munroe Falls High School on October 20, 2010.  Judge Beth Whitmore talked with the students before the oral arguments about how cases reach the Court, what happens before oral argument, and what the judges do after the case is argued.

North Ridgeville High School - January 31, 2008

The Court heard three oral arguments at North Ridgeville High School on Thursday, January 31, 2008.  Judge Donna Carr, Judge Carla Moore, and Judge Clair Dickinson heard cases in three one-hour sessions to allow different groups of students to watch each argument and to ask questions of the Judges and attorneys.

The Court visited Nordonia High School on Tuesday, November 27, 2007.  Judge Lynn Slaby, Judge Carla Moore, and Judge Clair Dickinson heard oral arguments in five cases pending before the Court of Appeals.  A sixth case was submitted to the panel without oral argument.

University of Akron School of Law - August 22, 2006

The Court convened at the University of Akron School of Law on August 22, 2006.  Judge Lynn Slaby, Judge Beth Whitmore, and Judge Carla Moore heard oral arguments in three criminal cases and three civil cases.  The Court held session in conjunction with the Law School's Orientation Week programs for new law students.

The Court appreciates the willingness of the attorneys to participate in this program, including the Law School's own Professor J. Dean Carro, Director of the University of Akron School of Law Legal Clinic.

 

Stow-Munroe Falls High School - May 8, 2006

The Court visited Stow-Munroe Falls High School on Monday, May 8, 2006.  Judge Lynn Slaby, Judge Donna Carr, and Judge Beth Whitmore heard oral arguments in two criminal cases pending before the Ninth District Court of Appeals and a third case was submitted on briefs without oral argument.

The Court heard arguments in the High School's auditorium.  Several classes attended the arguments and the Judges and attorneys - Prosecutor Phil Bogdanoff and defense attorneys Donald Hicks and James Reed - answered questions from the students.

 

The Court wants to thank the attorneys who agreed to present their arguments at the school and answer questions for the students.  And, of course, the Court appreciates the opportunity to visit another school and the effort of the teacher who organized the visit and all the teachers involved who prepared their students.

 

Medina High School - March 23, 2006

The Court visited Medina High School on Thursday, March 23, 2006.  Judge Donna Carr, Judge Carla Moore, and Judge Edna Boyle heard oral arguments in three cases pending before the Ninth District Court of Appeals.

Medina High School arranged for the Court to hear the arguments in the Performing Arts Center.  The Court heard arguments in three, one-hour sessions to allow three different groups of students to observe the process.  Judge Lynn Slaby began each session by providing background information about the Court and answering questions from students and teachers.

Judges Carr, Moore, and Boyle then heard the oral argument for each case, followed by another question and answer session that included the attorneys.


The Court extends its thanks to the attorneys who agreed to present their arguments at the school:  David Gedrock, Russell Hopkins, and Joseph Salzgeber.  And, of course, the Court appreciates the School's invitation and the effort of the teachers involved to prepare their students for the visit.

The Court heard four cases, both criminal and civil, at Hudson High School.  Judge Lynn Slaby, Judge Donna Carr, and Judge William Batchelder presided over the oral argument session.

The Court heard six cases, both criminal and civil, at Green High School.  Judge Lynn  Slaby, Judge Donna Carr, and Judge Beth Whitmore heard the oral arguments.

 

Orville High School - April 22, 2004

The Court heard three cases, a mix of criminal and civil, at Orville High School.  Judge Lynn Slaby, Judge Donna Carr, and Judge Beth Whitmore presided at this session.
